How it works?

A garbage disposal, mounted to the underside of the sink drain, chews up food scraps that are fed down the drain with a heavy flow of water. Also called grinding chamber or shredding blades, it breaks down the food and forces the particles and liquid down the drain. Water drained from the dishwasher also runs through the garbage disposal so large particles are ground prior to reaching the drainpipe

Types of garbage disposal:

Continuous-feed type that is a junk remover that is activated by a switch as you run the water. Batch-feed type that is trash remover that is activated by turning a stopper after loading the disposal with garbage.

5 tips to keep garbage disposal running right

Tip #1: Run the garbage disposer regularly to prevent it from freezing and corroding; also allow leftover food inside as it hardens causing bad odors and clogs.

Tip #2: Use only cold water, never use hot water for your garbage disposal. Although, hot water is good for cleaning many things, but it is bad for garbage disposal.

Tip #3: After it finishes grinding, keep it and the water running for a minute. This is a good guarantee to prevent clogs as all food has been cleaned out the drain pipe.

Tip #4: Cut waste into tiny chunks, and put only a few pieces at a time. Otherwise, the disposal will be overworked, clogged or jammed.

Tip #5: Soap and cold water will go a long way for cleaning; but once in a while, toss the peel from an orange, lemon, or lime in your waste disposal.

Avoid putting in your waste disposer

Avoid grinding grease or oil in the garbage disposal that easily solidifies and causes clogs in the drain pipe. Pasta, rice and potato peels have starch that can expand in the disposal and cause a clog making it difficult to flush out into the drain pipe. Do not put glass, plastic, metal, or paper can jam or dull the blades of a garbage disposal. Drain pipes are easily clogged by big bones, seeds, or pits, aside from dulling the blades and jamming the disposer.

Garbage disposal: “must have” for every home

As junk removal, as well as trash removal, it is an effective way to deal with food where it cannot rot and omit unpleasant odors. It helps the environment by reducing waste as about 20% of waste in the environment consists of food scraps. Without a garbage disposal installed, plumbing can become clogged.

Features to look for in buying garbage disposer

1. The machine is allowed by an electric cord to be used with typical outlets; while hard wire is needed by those without the cord.

2. To help the spinning blade of garbage disposer is the auto-reverse mode that clears jammed waste while some models feature a blade-oscillating ‘jaminator’ for clearing.

3. One half motor horsepower rating can handle bones and softer waste but if tougher wastes are included; look for a more powerful, 3/4-hp or 1-hp model.

4. Quick-mount neck in most garbage disposers encourages do-it-yourself installation; however, 3/4- and 1-hp models weigh from 16 to 30 pounds, two persons are needed to put one beneath your sink.

5. Safety cover prevents the unit from being turned on unless the cover is in place.

6. Grinding chamber made of stainless-steel is durable but weaker materials do not last long as they are easily damaged by beef bones and other tougher stuff placed inside the garbage disposal.

7. Warranty of waste removal must range from as little as 1 year to 10 years, or even the life of the unit.
