Every shutter bug must own a light meter

The amount of light in a scene is measured by light meter. In photography, this is valuable knowledge in photography, as you will be able to set perfectly the time for exposure. A light meter becomes far more important because films and processing cost a lit.

To own or not to own a light meter

You should own a light meter so you can record the light on model’s face, clothes and shoes. To get a very accurate exposure value, total the figures altogether and to get an average, divide the amount. SLR cameras today have accurate metering and the only time that problems happened is whenever the area is to dark or too bright.

Lux meter is not a light meter

A lux meter is an equipment that measures brightness falling on an object at a particular area. What this type of meter does is to gauge properly the intensity of brightness that is seen by the human eye. With a lux meter, you can clearly see and compare the impacts of different lighting conditions.

Choosing a light meter

The three modes of exposure measurement for the meter are: incident reflected and flash. It has the ability to read light from a 1-degree angle. When using flash, it’s important to have a meter that can fire a studio strobe. The exposure reading displayed is in the viewfinder of the meter as well as on the external LCD. Finally, in some meters display you can find the amount of flash used in exposure as compared to the amount of continuous light either ambient or tungsten.

Two ways to measure the light:

They are reflected and incident. Your DSLR measures the amount of light reflected in camera is automatically calculated into a shutter speed and f-stop value. A handheld meter can also measure incident light. To use it for incident light you would place it near the subject and point it toward the camera. This can be a more accurate reading because it measures the light directly from the source, rather than a reflection of the source.

Light meter types

1. Great service is done by your in-camera light meter because it’s always there with you and if you know how to use it, your pictures are very accurate. This type of metering makes sure that your subject shows up as a midtone.

2. Handheld light meters were necessary in the days of film and before in-camera light meters. Many film shooters today still depend on their handheld light meters for a perfect exposure to save time and eliminate waste.

3. IPhone also called Pocket Light Meter is used if your film camera does not have a light meter and a handheld meter. It uses the built-in camera to measure the light and give a reading based on the ISO rating of the film.

Light meter does not replace knowledge and experience, but support them. Knowing how your meter works and how the different ways of measuring work will make you a better photographer.
