Direct spray towards the eye

As a lachrymatory agent, capsicum spray or pepper spray is directed to the eyes. When a person comes into contact with pepper spray, their eyes will close immediately. From “bubbling” or “boiling” sensations to eye pain, it will be followed by temporary blindness. Depending on the strength of the spray solution, the effect may last from 30 to 45 minutes.

What’s in the pepper spray?

An active ingredient contained in pepper spray is capsicum that is derived from chilis genus. Pepper must be finely ground after extraction from oleoresin caps capsicum (oc). Using an organic solvent as ethanol, the capsicum is then extracted. This inflammatory agent in the oil is exactly the same substance that makes chilli peppers hot. But in oc spray, it is present at a much higher concentration.

Pepper spray uses

For almost 40 decades, pepper spray has been constantly used by the police to subdue people who are aggressive and uncooperative. When oc spray is sprayed into the face, the subject becomes temporarily blinded. In this condition, police officers have an easy way to remove violent suspects from a scene and arrest them.

Like Taser gun, it is used for defense. As one of the self-defense products, pepper spray is a very effective way to deter or stop any kind of physical attack. Sprayed into the face, the attacker is temporarily blinded, it gives the victim time to ran and seek for help.

Is it lethal?

Pepper spray is an authentic derivative from very hot peppers. Exposure to this compound is painful and inflammatory when it comes into contact with the eyes, mucous membranes and skin. It is the best effective way to prevent deters or stops any kind of physical attack. Capsicum spray is nonlethal but instant and will last up to 45 minutes, entirely disabling and pacifying attacker.

Types of pepper spray

There are three common oc spray patterns for liquid pepper spray dispensers

Stream: A narrow stream of liquid is expelled. Being sprayed, the solution in the area is highly concentrated but becomes more difficult to aim accurately.

Mist: A mist of fine liquid is sprayed. This allows the spray to cover a larger area and makes it easier to hit the target’s face.

Fog: A fog is similar to a mist but has a wider range of spray.

What about Pepper gel?

Pepper gel is a good alternative an increased effective range of up to 25 feet. An increase of the effective range, also improves your overall safety. Dispersed as a high term pattern, the gel reaches the intended target where it sticks like glue and very hard to remove. For indoor use, Pepper gel is perfect for indoor use because it does not emit any fumes and it is also completely eliminated in any unintentional overspray.

Pepper Spray Laws

Pepper Spray is legal in all 50 states. However, as one of the self-defense products, possession and/or use may be regulated or prohibited by law in some jurisdictions. Never use oc spray unless you feel you are threatened or you need to protect someone else. If you are not careful, you could be sued or/and fined $1000 or be jailed for 3 years. Pepper Spray is not allowed in a commercial air. Being a federal offense, you are fine $25,000.
